Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. A suicide attempt is when someone harms themselves with the intent to end their life, but they do not die as a result of their actions. Several factors can increase the risk for suicide and protect against it. Suicide is connected to other forms of injury and violence, and causes serious health and economic consequences.
Suicide attempts rising among black teens
Suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth is an endemic public health issue: LGBTQ youth face more bullying and report higher levels of suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts than their straight peers, according to the National Center for Education Statistics and the Trevor Project. These are the states, according to the study, that reported fewer youth suicide attempts and fewer cases of forced sexual intercourse, regardless of sexual orientation.
